Maureen Bruno Roy 's Race Reports

BEACON CYCLOCROSS, BRIDGETON, NJ
HPCX CYCLOCROSS, JAMESBURG, NJ
NOVEMBER 11-12, 2007

This weekend we headed down to New Jersey for a double header on some of the toughest courses around.  Day 1 had several running sections including a giant set of amphitheater steps and day 2 was super hilly.  I was looking forward to these races and feeling like my fitness is really improving each week.

Saturday’s Race:

It was cloudy and chilly but no real rain in sight.  The competition would be very tough with a National Champ mountain biker lining up on the start, but I was feeling ready to dig in.  On the first lap I settled in behind another rider hoping to draft off of her for the first flat fast sections.  We were joined by another rider and set off in pursuit of Georgia Gould (we actually never was her again!).  The course seemed to weave in and out of the woods until we made it to the giant amphitheater steps. I set off attacking the steps with a smooth rhythm that reminded me of when I raced hurdles.  I was able to gap the other 2 riders and set off in 2nd place where I was able to stay for the finish.

Sunday’s Race:

I was definitely feeling a bit tired from the running from the day before but knew that the hilly course would be good for me.  I was able to move to the front of the race at the beginning and get on Georgia’s wheel up the first few hills and turns.  Quickly she pulled away from me and I was chasing alone in 2nd place for the rest of the race.  The course had some good technical turns and it was essential not to make mistakes or risk losing a lot of time.  I tried to race as smooth as possible and held onto another 2nd place for the weekend.
